DO-178C Verification & Validation
Ensuring the highest safety and reliability standards in the industry
while minimizing rework and accelerating certification path.
What is DO-178C ?
DO-178C, or "Software Considerations in Airborne Systems and Equipment Certification", is a guideline developed by RTCA for ensuring the safety and reliability of software used in airborne systems. It provides a framework for planning, developing, verifying, and certifying software to meet FAA and EASA regulatory requirements. The standard defines five software levels (A to E), based on the severity of potential failure, with Level A requiring the most rigorous assurance processes.
Not all companies have the people or the competence to rigorously verify and certify critical software. Avionyx is here to help !
Avionyx value-added proposal includes:
-
All facets of development assurance guidelines for DAL D to DAL A Projects (DAL E does not require formal development assurance)
-
Technical supplements for model-based development and object-oriented design, as well as tool qualification
-
Access to FAA DER personnel for providing both mentoring and conduct of required compliance reviews as needed
Avionyx Team members have tremendous experience in the following areas:
-
Software High-Level Requirements (HLRs) and Low-Level Requirements (LLRs) per DO-178C
-
Software Verification, Validation, Tests (Functional & Robustness), Traceability
-
Structural Coverage Analysis
-
Performance Testing
-
Worts-Case Execution Time (WCET)
DO-254 Verification & Validation
Proposing FPGA / HW Design and Verification.
What is DO-254?
DO-254, or "Design Assurance Guidance for Airborne Electronic Hardware", is a standard that provides guidance for the development of complex airborne electronic hardware, such as FPGAs, ASICs, and circuit boards. Like DO-178C for software, DO-254 ensures that hardware used in safety-critical avionics systems is developed to rigorous safety and reliability standards, with different assurance levels based on the potential impact of a hardware failure.
Avionyx capabilities include:
-
Programmable hardware requirements (write and/or review), design, development and verification; these activities include multiple forms of simulation and place and route capabilities (FPGA, CPLDs, etc.) for small and medium-scale designs
-
Hardware schematics and Circuit Board Assemblies (CBA) / Circuit Card Assemblies (CCA) design work, including work associated with complex COTS devices and electronic component management (e.g. dealing with parts obsolescence issues)
Avionyx members have highly significant experience in the following areas:
-
Hardware requirements per DO-254
-
Hardware Design & Implementation per DO-254
-
Hardware Verification, Validation, Tests (Functional & Robustness), Traceability
-
Performance Testing
-
Worts-Case Execution Time (WCET)
DO-278A Verification & Validation
From airborne to ground-bound.
Bringing DO-178C rigor to DO-278A assurance.
What is DO-278A ?
DO-278A, titled "Guidelines for Communication, Navigation, Surveillance, and Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) Systems Software Integrity Assurance", is a standard developed by RTCA that provides guidance for developing and assuring software used in ground-based and space-based aviation systems. It is similar in structure and intent to DO-178C but is tailored for non-airborne systems that support functions like air traffic control and navigation infrastructure. DO-278A defines assurance levels (AL1 to AL6), corresponding to the criticality of the software’s function, and helps ensure that ground-based systems meet the necessary reliability and safety requirements for integration with airborne operations. DO-278A provides extensive guidance for the use of COTS software.
Avionyx team members can support:
-
Software High-Level Requirements (HLRs) and Low-Level Requirements (LLRs) per DO-278A
-
Software Verification, Validation, Tests (Functional & Robustness), Traceability
-
Structural Coverage Analysis
-
Performance Testing
-
Worst-Case Execution Time (WCET)

DO-330
Understanding the importance of demonstrating tools correctness
What is DO-330 ?
DO-330, titled "Software Tool Qualification Considerations," is a guidance document developed by RTCA and EUROCAE to support the qualification of software tools used in the development and verification of airborne systems and equipment. It supplements DO-178C and DO-278A by defining how to assess and qualify tools based on their impact on the software lifecycle and the potential consequences of tool errors. DO-330 introduces both Criteria (1 to 3) and Tool Qualification Levels (TQLs) from TQL-1 (most stringent) to TQL-5 (least), depending on how a tool influences safety-critical software. Tool qualification is essential when tools are used to automate, replace, or aid certification-relevant activities.

Requirements Tool Solution
Polarion can be so much more !
Polarion, a leading requirements management tool, can be so much more than a simple requirements capture and traceability database.
Most Polarion customers utilize the product off the shelf, integrating it with other Siemens solutions or connecting it to their internal systems, but are missing the power of extensions and customizations.

As an example, using Polarion as an underlying engine, Avionyx has developed a robust platform designed to manage all software artifacts necessary for compliance with stringent standards like DO-178C, DO-254, DO-278A and ASTM F3153-15.
Avionyx has the experience and capabilities to develop these types of certification tools.
